Micro USB Introduction

Before the advent of USB-C (USB Type-C), Micro USB cables were one of the most commonly used types of data cables for charging and data transfer. Despite the growing popularity of USB-C, Micro USB is still widely used in Android phones, Bluetooth headsets, digital cameras and kits.

Micro USB is a USB connector. It is smaller than a standard USB connector and is more common in mobile devices. micro USB connectors are commonly used to charge and transfer data to devices such as digital cameras and smartphones, Mp3 players, GPS devices, photo printers and digital cameras. mirco USB connectors are also used for laptop charging cables.

Common USB Types:

What is Micro USB?

The Micro USB was developed in 2007 by the USB-IF to provide more convenient charging methods and functionality. It is also smaller in size than mini USB. You will find three different versions of micro USB in the market: Micro-A, Micro-B, and Micro USB 3.0. All versions are slightly different in shape, inner workings, and speed.

The size of Micro USB is : 7.4mmx2.35mm.

Micro-B USB Cable

Micro-B USB cable is the most common type or, better we can say, ‘the go-to standard for power and data transfer’ for many android phones. You will find both female and male connectors of the micro-B USB to use devices with different connection types. Mostly, a female connector is used in smartphones, and the cable has a male connector.

Generally, a micro-B USB has a black receptacle and compact 5-pin design with tapered edges in the port. It also supports the high-speed transfer rate of 480 Mbps. The connector looks like a half-hexagon in shape – the best connector ever made – until USB Type-C arrived. The pin description of Micro USB-A and B are shown in the figure below.

Micro USB 3.0

Micro USB 3.0 has an additional pin group (ten pin plug) on the side, enabling its incredible speed. It offers 10 times better data transfer rate compared to a regular USB. Moreover, Micro USB 3.0 features a double-socketed connection port – the biggest part is the same as regular micro USB, and the other is USB 3.0 port. Devices that use the USB 3.0 include Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 3.

The pin description of the Superspeed Micro B USB (Micro USB B 3.0) connector is given in the figure below.

Will micro USB still last?

Micro USB is no longer considered the standard for charging and data transfer for most mobile devices. In fact, it has been replaced by the more versatile and user-friendly USB Type-C connector. However, there are still devices that use Micro USB, such as some fitness trackers and older smartphones. While micro USB is not as common as it once was, there are still some markets for it.

Many new versions of electronic products use USB-C ports. However, a Micro USB cable is cheaper than USB-C. It is still widely used in many old versions of Android devices, battery charging packs, Bluetooth headphones, tablets, Mp3 players, GPS devices, photo printers, digital cameras, and e-readers to charge and transfer data.
