The previous original name standard of USB :
From the earliest USB 1 to USB 2, the naming of the USB standard has followed the simple and distinguishable X.x version to advance the law, but from USB 3, USB version updates have become confusing until the latest USB 4.0 V2. However, recently, the USB-IF re-changed the naming rules of the USB interface: "USB + transfer rate".
USB-IF has two key changes in naming, one is the official removal of the USB 3.x/USB4 commercial naming scheme, and the second is the removal of the SuperSpeed USB brand. From now on the naming of the USB interface will be directly named with "USB + transfer rate", which means that in the future we will know the transfer rate of the USB interface directly from the name.
According to the new naming rules, USB 3.X and USB4 will be changed to USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps and USB 40Gbps, while USB 4.0 V2, which was being drafted before, is not named now, but it is estimated that it will be USB 80Gbps.
Of course the new interface will all be Type-C now, which is unchanged.
The new naming rules will apply to a variety of printing scenarios such as interfaces, cables, packaging and chargers, and in the case of fast charging chargers, the maximum power must also be marked.
This change is undoubtedly more user-friendly, the kind of naming in the past is easy to confuse, and so that users can not intuitively understand their products, it is better to directly mark the speed. However, the name of the old USB 1.0 and USB 2.0 will not change, because these two old USB interfaces are indeed weaker performance, USB 2.0 transfer speed of 480Mbps, there is no need to change.
That is, this new naming convention is for post-USB 3.0 versions and future new versions.
In addition to the logo of the interface, USB-IF also gives the naming logo of the charger and charging cable.
The logo of the USB cable is a little more complicated, divided into 40Gbps/240W, 40Gbps/60W, 20Gbps/240W, 20Gbps/60W, 5Gbps/240W, 5Gbps/60W and 240W, 60W eight kinds.
In addition to the cable needs to indicate the charging power and transfer rate, the product box also needs to have a red and blue USB logo, indicating the "certified" charging speed and 40Gbps, 20Gbps, 10Gbps or 5Gbps speed. If you support both charging and data transfer, USB-IF recommends using the red and blue logo to indicate, but it is estimated that many cable manufacturers will only choose a single-color logo.
But the problem is not completely solved, although the USB IF organization to make the naming of the USB interface more simple and clear, but at the same time they will not have restrictions on manufacturers, because USB is an open standard, and does not force manufacturers to use any name, so manufacturers are willing to use any name can be. So for quite some time, the original name will continue to exist.
Of course, the next needs a lot of time to promote to let the public familiar with this new set of naming rules, but as for this new set of rules is good, it will depend on the future market experience.
