USB4 Version 2.0 to be released soon with 80Gbps speed

On Sept 1, 2022, the USB Promoter Group announced the upcoming release of the USB4 version 2.0 specification, a major update to enable data performance of up to 80 Gbps over USB Type-C cables and connectors. USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) specifications will also be updated to achieve this higher level of data performance. All of these specification updates are expected to be released in advance of a series of USB DevDays developer events to be held this November.

Protocol updates are also in progress to enable higher performance USB 3.2, DisplayPort™ and PCI Express® (PCIe®) data tunneling to best utilize the higher available bandwidth.

“Once again following USB tradition, this updated USB4 specification doubles data performance to deliver higher levels of functionality to the USB Type-C ecosystem,” said Brad Saunders, USB Promoter Group Chairman. “Solutions seeing the most benefit from this speed enhancement include higher-performance displays, storage, and USB-based hubs and docks.”

Key features of the USB4® Version 2.0 solution include below 3 items:

● Up to 80 Gbps operation, based on a new physical layer architecture, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables

● Updates to data and display protocols to better use the increase in available bandwidth.

o USB data architecture updates now enable USB 3.2 data tunneling to exceed 20 Gbps.

o Updated to align with the latest versions of the DisplayPort and PCIe specifications.

● Backward compatibility with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt™ 3.

There is also good news for end users, that is, the new interface naming is no longer as confusing as the previous USB 3.0/3.1/3.2, USB-IF this time will strengthen the brand and marketing, USB 80Gbps cable will have a respective certification label.

USB4 v2.0 80Gbps transfer speed, is it half duplex or full duplex?

Guess how it is implemented through these 3 technical solutions:

1. Half-duplex mode, such as DP 2.0, which is not very difficult to implement.

2. PCI-E lane upgrade from 3.0 to 4.0, which also directly doubles the speed and maintains full duplex; however, it requires more equipment.

3. New solution, the press release said " new physical layer architecture ". This is unlikely, otherwise it is USB5.

In general, the first two technical solutions are more likely, especially the second one.
